Will Spray Lining and Coatings Products Adhere to Bare Steel?
Question:
Will your SL&C brand products adhere to bare steel, or do I need to use a primer?
Answer:
If you scuff the bare steel, it will usually adhere well, but we always advise to simply do it right and apply a quality primer first. Some steel, and other metals (such as aluminum) can be resistant to bedliner type coatings. If using a primer, we recommend a quality 2 part epoxy such as our High Adhesion Primer. You can also find automotive quality products from your local automotive finishes supplier. Avoid using products from general retailers unless you have done your research.
When scuffing your surface, we recommend using 80 – 120 grit sandpaper generally. If you are applying a thinner coating (like smooth coat on exterior), 180 grit, or Scotchpad will do the trick. Make sure to clean the metal good with wax and grease cleaner prior to top coating. A quick wipe with acetone or MEK can be beneficial for removing oils and waxes. Avoid allowing the solvent to pool or stay on surface if it’s painted.
While some bare metals can be coated well, we would still recommend spraying down with an epoxy or self etch primer first.
