Question:

Can I add aggregates or mediums to your coatings to change the texture to a more slip proof finish? I was thinking about broadcasting sand for a final finish.

Answer:

If using our General Application products, the pot life when properly mixed is 15 minutes, and initial curing is more than 45 minutes.  These are products which can be applied by any available method (spray, brush, roll). This leaves ample time for any broadcast media to embed in the coating, and is the process used for many applications from specialized floor and roof coatings to rock walls. Alternatively, most aggregates can be combined in moderate proportions to the product before spraying if they do not impair the spray equipment. When rolling or brushing a coating with media added, be careful to avoid allowing areas with higher concentration of the aggregate than others.

Our Rhino/Line-X Alternative polyurea cartridge products set in seconds and don’t provide enough time to broadcast a medium which will actually settle into the coating. For this reason, applications not specifically requiring polyurea are recommended to consider the General Application products. If mixing aggregates into the product while still in a liquid state, remember that most of the medium additive will settle to the bottom of the applied coat, and not provide any surface texture. They are generally recommended primarily for a final, thinner topcoat application.  Additionally, since the sand or other additive will have a much thinner coating of our product over the media, this may eventually wear off enough to show the medium used for texture. Your best appearance would include consideration of the color of your medium to ensure it will not be an abstraction if it should be exposed.
